A collection of abnormal cells in your brain is known as a brain tumor. There is very limited space in our brain and if any unnecessary growth occurs in there, it may cause problems. Keep in mind that brain tumors can be malignant and benign. This type of tumor puts pressure on your brain and as a result, it causes brain damage which can pose a threat to your life. If you are diagnosed with a brain tumor, then do not waste your time anymore. Visit a brain tumor specialist near you as soon as possible.
Risk Factors
There are various risk factors of brain tumor such as:
-
Age
-
Family history
-
Chemical exposure
-
Race
-
Radiation exposure
The World Health Organization sponsors clinicians and pathologists so that the experts can develop the classification of the brain tumor. In the meantime, the Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy Updates new recommendations which are able to guide the WHO’s brain tumor classifications.
Why Are These Updates So Important?
1. For Better Treatment
If the experts develop the classification of brain tumors, then it will help the doctor to diagnose the patients more accurately. As a result, the doctors also understand what type of treatment the patient needs to recover from the disease.
2. Everything Depend on Accurate Classification
You should know that various types of clinical trials depend on accurate classification. Not only that, their understanding of experimental studies such as in mice or in human clinical trials depends on the accurate classification.
The New Updates
There are various updates included in the WHO Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System which is based on 2016 and the cIMPACT also updates - how the tumors look under a microscope. Few updates are about brain tumor grades and other updates are about how specific types of tumors are classified based on the molecular features.
-
There are 22 new types of tumors added in the updates. Seven types are added in the glioma category, four each in the ependymal and embryonal groups, three in the glioneuronal category and one type is added in a new pituitary tumor among them.
-
There are three types of tumors that were variants before. Now, these types are recognized as their own distinct full tumor type.
-
There are various types of gliomas that occur in infants, children, adolescents and these are different from their adult counterparts of the same name in nature. There will be a division of diffuse gliomas into groups that occur in adults and those which occur in children.
Adult-type diffuse gliomas
-
Glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype (grade 4)
-
Oligodendroglioma, IDH-mutant and 1p/19q-co-deleted (grades 2 and 3)
Pediatric-type diffuse high-grade gliomas
-
Diffuse pediatric-type high-grade glioma, H3-wildtype and IDH-wildtype
-
Infant-type hemispheric glioma
-
Diffuse midline glioma, H3 K27-altered
-
Diffuse hemispheric glioma, H3 G34-mutant
