Pain levels associated with scoliosis vary widely from one individual to the next. Age and the severity of the illness are the two most important determinants of pain. Scoliosis-related discomfort can appear in locations other than the back in certain patients. Because of the success of chiropractic-centered treatment and scoliosis specific exercises, it's possible to avoid surgery altogether. See what scoliosis specialists have to say.
Back Pain and Scoliosis
Scoliosis and back pain have a bad reputation due to a lot of myths. People without a diagnosis may believe that having scoliosis is a painless condition. Scoliosis is sometimes misunderstood as a painless condition, although this is only true in some cases and at specific ages of people with the condition.
Living with scoliosis is difficult no matter your age or the severity of your problem. Scoliosis diagnosis is not a death sentence, but it can have a significant impact on many parts of a person's life. We make that point to our patients and their careers.
With the help of our patients, we may be able to help you reduce their spinal curvature, increase their function, and control their discomfort. As they progress, they see that dedication pays off in spectacular ways. The more a patient is willing to work, the more progress you will notice.
A person's age and the severity of their disease are both influences on their level of discomfort.
Pain in Adolescents
The severity of a patient's scoliosis is heavily influenced by his or her age. Over 80 percent of all confirmed instances are due to a condition known as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).
Approximately 20% of teenagers with AIS feel some level of back or muscle pain, however this is not the case for the great majority of my adolescent patients.
This makes sense because the spine lengthens as a child grows. The most prevalent diagnosis age range is between 10 and 18 years old, and since puberty occurs at this time, rapid development is a significant factor.
Because a person's spine lengthens with age, there is less compression on an adolescent's spinal cord than on an adult's.
Adults and the Experience of Pain
Scoliosis affects adults as well as adolescents, however the latter group is more likely to experience symptoms. Adults who are born with the disorder can develop it as an adolescent, but most cases of de novo scoliosis occur as children grow older without being diagnosed.
Adult scoliosis is most commonly caused by degenerative, traumatic, or pathological factors. When a scoliosis develops, adults are significantly more likely than teenagers to experience discomfort as a result of it.
Because adults no longer grow, the curvature of the spine compresses the surrounding tissues and nerves, resulting in significant pain and discomfort for the patient.
Many adult patients often complain of discomfort in places other than their backs, such as their feet, hips, knees, neck, legs, and headaches, which are all caused by a spinal misalignment in the lower body.
With the adult patients, we try to get their curvature back to where it was before the advancement, and this gives a lot of relief from pain and discomfort for everyone involved.
Many patients find that as time passes, the amount of pain they experience increases or becomes a significant factor.

There are a variety of therapy options available if pain is a concern for a patient with scoliosis. At-home therapies, including as exercises and stretches, are used in conjunction with treatment plans to help patients heal faster.
