Injured Workers

Hurt at Work? Here's What to Expect.

A workplace spine injury can be frightening and confusing — especially when you're dealing with a workers' compensation claim at the same time. Our team is here to give you a thorough, honest evaluation and help you understand your options.

What to Expect

Your Evaluation Process

When you come to Neuroscience Specialists for a workers' compensation evaluation, you will be seen by a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon — not a physician's assistant or nurse practitioner. We take time to review your history, examine you thoroughly, and explain our findings clearly.

1
Scheduling your appointment
Contact our office directly or ask your case manager to send a referral. Bring your workers' comp claim number, employer information, and any imaging (MRI or X-rays) previously obtained.
2
Your consultation
Your surgeon will review all prior records, imaging, and your current symptoms. A physical examination will be performed. You will have time to ask questions — please bring a written list.
3
Imaging review or orders
If additional imaging is needed, we will order it and review it before making recommendations. We interpret your own films, not just outside reports.
4
Treatment recommendations
Your surgeon will provide a clear explanation of the diagnosis and recommend treatment — which may be non-surgical, surgical, or a recommendation for further conservative care before any decision is made.
5
Reporting to your carrier
With your authorization, we will provide required reports to your insurance carrier or employer as required under Oklahoma workers' compensation law.
Your Rights

What You Should Know

Under Oklahoma workers' compensation law, injured workers have rights regarding medical care and physician selection. While we cannot provide legal advice, we encourage patients to understand their rights under the Oklahoma Workers' Compensation Act or consult with a workers' compensation attorney if they have concerns about their claim.

Can I see a specialist?
Yes. Workers' compensation typically covers evaluation and treatment by a specialist, including a neurosurgeon, when medically indicated.
Do I need a referral?
Your employer's workers' comp insurer may require authorization before specialty evaluation. Check with your employer or case manager.
Is surgery required?
Not necessarily. Many work-related spine injuries are treated non-surgically. We will only recommend surgery when it is clearly the best option.
What about return to work?
Our surgeons take return-to-work seriously. We will provide clear, evidence-based work restrictions and expected timelines based on your specific injury and treatment.
